Klappentext:

A woman meets a stranger who tells her that her identity is a lie. Hundreds of children's brains rest in jars whilst their relatives search for answers. Crowds of refugees travel in hope of a new life across the ocean. Prisoners are subjected to indescribable horrors in the name of science and medical research. And a traveller arrives in a nondescript city to confront her past, a city which was once a significant port of departure but has now become a provincial, inward-looking town.

Such are the threads of this kaleidoscopic novel from the author of Trieste. Fact and fiction, memory and the act of forgetting, tradition and its destruction are stitched together to form a collage that bears witness to the darkest faces of human existence and looks askance at the horrors of the last century. Drawing on a wealth of literary traditions, Daša Drndić weaves together a narrative from fragments and snapshots whose very format raises penetrating questions about history and the processes by which we describe and remember it.
